American Wirehair Appearance

The American Wirehair is a medium size cat with a joyful expression. Their body is muscular and well balanced. The head is round and in good proportion to the body with prominent cheekbones and a well developed muzzle. The eyes are quite large, round and set well apart with a slightly slope. The ears are medium size with rounded tips, similar to the American Shorthair. The tail is medium length and tapering to rounded tip. The weight of the American Wirehair is around 8-15 pounds.

The American Wirehair coat is its most notable feature. Their coat is coarse, springy, dense, hard and medium in length. It feels distinctive to the touch giving the appearance of “wiring”. The American Wirehair also has curly whiskers. All colors and patterns are recognized similar to American Shorthair with the only difference on the coat texture. The most common colors are: white, blue and brown tabby. The American Wirehair breed is fairly uncommon and rarely seen outside United States.

The American Wirehair posses one of the happiest temperament of all cats. They are relaxed, friendly, very devoted and loyal to its master. They make a great companion cat and are very similar in personality to the American Shorthair. They are also curious, inquisitive and want to know everything that happens around them but retain their independence.

American Wirehairs are suited to apartment living. They are smart, easy to train and highly adaptable. They could fit perfectly in an apartment without yard or in a farm with plenty space. They are active, energetic and playful cats that require some exercise in a safe area; but if a yard is not available it is a good idea to buy lots of toys and a climbing post so they could expend some time playing, scratching and calming down. The American Wirehair is a sociable cat that gets along well with other cats and pets. They are also good and very understanding of children.

The American Wirehair is a relatively healthy breed. Their coat tends to be 'unbalanced'. They are prone to hair loss and hair breakage which can be triggered by environmental factors like weather and stress. The American Wirehair skin can be sensitive and prone to allergies.

American Wirehair Care and Grooming

The American Wirehair requires a regular grooming to keep its coat in good condition. A rubber massage could be done when the cat is shedding to remove loose and dead hair. The coat should be brush and comb ones a week. Bathing is optional. Most of these cats have a greasy coat, which means they tend to need bathing more frequently than other cat breeds.

It is recommended for all cats and household pets to have annual vaccinations, veterinary checkups, and a quality diet. Use a special ear cleaner only when necessary to keep the ear clean and trim off the sharp points of the claws regularly using good clippers.
